The aim of MESHS governance is to watch over the implementation of the research centre’s guidelines and the coordination among its affiliated laboratories.
The management team
The management team is elected, as the MESHS director, by the governing committee after consultation with the council of units and the laboratory council. The management team is an executive board, executing MESHS’ scientific project. Composed of a director, a deputy director and five members, the management team meets once a month on average.

The governing committee
The governing committee gathers representatives of the nine institutions supervising the MESHS, in addition to representatives of the national MSH network, the Hauts-de-France region and the French state. They meet at least once a year. The governing committee decides on the general organisation and functioning of the MESHS. After consultation with the scientific board, it adopts MESHS’ scientific program. Budget plans are also adopted by this committee.
The supervising institutions are: the National Center for Scientific Research, the public universities of the region Hauts-de-France (University of Lille, Artois University, Université de Valenciennes et du Hainaut-Cambrésis, Université Littoral Côte d’Opale, University of Picardy Jules Verne) and Lille Catholic University.
The council of units
The council of units gathers representatives of all MESHS’ affiliated laboratories. It is consulted regarding the scientific program, the main research guidance and the functioning of the MESHS.
The scientific board
The scientific board evaluates ex ante and ex post the research projects financed by the MESHS. The board counts 15 members at most. As a guarantee of their independence, all of them must be external to the supervising institutions, one third of whom being from outside France. This distance relative to the associated laboratories gives to the scientific board independence in its task of evaluating the financed projects of the MESHS.
The laboratory council
This council is composed of MESHS administrative and management teams. It is consulted on every major policy of the research centre.
The general assembly
The general assembly meets at least once a year. It is composed of researchers and lecturers of MESHS’ affiliated laboratories.
